“Christ
Presbyterian Church is a worshipping body of believers, grounded in God’s
Word, increasingly gripped by His grace, growing in community, and going
in mission.” |

“Home with the Kids” Imagine you’re sitting across the table, having coffee with a friend who confesses, “I’m really not looking forward to this. I’ve known it was coming and have done all that I could to prepare myself. But I really have no idea how I’m going to make it through.” What is the concern? What is the source of this crushing anxiety? A trip to the dentist? An audit by the IRS? What if I told you it was the anticipation of, now that school is out, a whole summer “stuck at home” with the kids? Now let me go one step further. It’s not your friend who said this across the table. It’s you who said it to yourself. Now what? Let me suggest a few thoughts and (more importantly) some passages from the Scriptures to go with them. Please note that these thoughts are not meant to exhaustively cover the topic nor are the passages listed the only ones worth considering. But I would start with… - The need to repent of such an attitude and see our children as Jesus does. o Psalm 127:3 o Mark 10:13-16 - The call to shepherd their hearts (and not just their actions). o Deuteronomy 6:6-7 o Proverbs 13:24 o Proverbs 22:6 o Matthew 15:16-20 - Things to impress upon them – prayerfully, patiently, and persistently. o Subjection to authority § Proverbs 6:20-23 § Ephesians 6:1-3 o Patterns of speech § Truthfulness · Ephesians 4:25 § Wholesomeness · Ephesians 4:29-32 § Gentleness · Ephesians 4:15-16 o Choice of friends § Proverbs 13:20 o Complaining § Philippians 2:14-16 - The need to take advantage of the time we have with them. o Psalm 90:12 o Ephesians 5:15-16 - The need to live as examples for them (strive for yourself what you want to see in them). o Ephesians 6:4 - The assurance we have that their growth in Christ is ultimately up to the Spirit’s work in them (and not our own). o Galatians 5:22-23 - Our common need of Jesus. o Galatians 2:15-16 Perhaps that’s a start. It’s not that we have another summer to “grit it out” with our children. It’s that we have the opportunity to share growth in the gospel together in a new setting. Start with yourself. Then lead them as you go. Go in peace.
